“Beauty is strenght. But art – art all alone, detached, sensuous for the sake of sensuousness, not to perpetuate inspiration or thought, art that is mere art – seems to me to be the most arrant as it is the most unexcuseable rubbish.

I find in the early part of this book I have written that I could never be a great poet except in mute feeling. This is silly and immature observation. If my feelings or anybody’s are so great that they would make great poetry, be sure that they are great poetry and that he who feels them is a great poet. many of us deceive ourselves thus trifling emotions; and so given great feelings and the glory attached to them will burst out of itself unaided and uncontrolled. Of course, in the first place, prosaic people do not have poetical feelings; but that is not part of the discussion. I am speaking of the fellows who feel sweet but small pains and curse the consequent ineffectiveness that retards the advance of good work.
