Decolonising the Cinema (ITA-ENG TXT)

  • avrà a disposizione i nomi dei registi e del cast, nonché i titoli dei film della rassegna: per poterli ritrovare e condividere all’interno della propria comunità, ma anche per proseguire da questi nel proprio personale percorso di cinefile/i;
  • sarà indirizzato all’iscrizione al circuito delle Biblioteche di Roma, per il reperimento gratuito di film e libri;
  • sarà informato sulle caratteristiche di base di un proiettore, sulla Licenza MPLC e sui passi per costituire un’associazione senza scopo di lucro e un proprio cineclub;

  • Licenza Ombrello MPLC
  • Proiettore YABER Lumen;
  • Sedie;
  • ‘Tessera sospesa’: tesseramento all’Ass.ColtivAzione di 50 soci

Cineforum for asylum seekers and refugees
To be specific, when the act of seeing is presented as an act of witnessing violence and, more specifically, as the witnessing of the conversion of bodies into objects, viewers become parties to a reverse anthropomorphizing. Here those who were previously human have lost their humanity, and the very staging of viewers within the frame reinforces the violence of a dehumanizing that dues more than make impossible the category of the human.” (Samuels, 2006, quoted at p.51 by Mark Sealy in Decolonizing the Camera: Photography in Racial Time, Lawrence & Wishart, London 2019).
The voyeurism of those who agree to be spectators of the murder of George Floyd or Alika Ogorchukwu, the charitable gaze of those who give a few coins to the asylum seeker standing outside a supermarket, those judging the degree of honesty or criminality based on the color of one’s skin, the rapacious who eroticize a body, all have in common not only the fact of being the result of a colonization of the collective imagination, but also the effect of conditioning the spectators to identify one’s self with the body-object, inoculating the morbose “peculiar sensation, this double consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, measuring one’s soul by the tape of the world that looks on in amused contempt and pity.” (Du Bois & Gibson, 1996, quoted at p.156 by Mark Sealy in Decolonising the Camera: Photography in Racial Time, Lawrence & Wishart, London 2019).
The choice of projecting films that belie this outlook and reduce this double consciousness to silence, is what decolonization of cinema means.
From 2017 to this day, Pensare Migrante’s Orientation to Training and Work Project group has drawn up 520 curricula for asylum seekers and refugees, defining a map of skills, peculiarities, dreams and individual experiences. 43% of these people, albeit with regular contracts, are still carrying out jobs that depreciate their skills, training and experiences gained in their countries of origin: years of abuse (bureaucratic, socio-functional) almost always result in self-depreciation, which promotes social segregation. All this is also accepted because of the colonization of cameras (photos or videos).
An e-mail will be sent to 520 people, requiring them to answer the following two questions:
– Which film do you believe would be the most forceful in fighting racial prejudices?
– Which of these films have you seen and, from 1 to 10, what mark would you give regarding their effectiveness in fighting racial prejudices?
In a collective meeting among the members of the ColtivAzione Association, the results of the questions will be discussed and 24 films will be chosen from those mentioned in the replies.
Of the above-mentioned 520 e-mail recipients, the Association’s membership card will be offered to the first 50 who show an interest in participating: they will be provided on a bi-monthly basis for one year at the headquarters of the Association Gli Occidentati (Those damaged by westerners). These 50 will receive an e-mail invitation, to which a short multilingual presentation to the projections (in Italian-English-French) will be attached each time.
Photographer Fabiana Sartini will document the experience and at the end of the review, an exhibition will be open to the public in Rome, at the bookstore Libri Necessari.
Those who will have participated in the project will:
– have at their disposal the names of the directors and the cast, as well as the titles of the films of
the review: in order to be able to find them and share within their communities, but also to
pursue their paths of cinephiles as a result of this review;
– be lead to enroll in the circuit of libraries in Rome, to find films and books for free;
– be informed about the basic characteristics of a projector, on the MPLC license and the steps
required to found a non -profit association and its own film club;
– receive a certificate of participation.
It is believed that the positive return of this experience will have long-term resonance and duration, for the benefit of society.
The expenses they will be incurred are those for:
– MPLC umbrella license to publicly project movies;
– Projector;
– Seats;
– Reimbursement of one -off expenses for the project manager;
– Refund of monthly expenses for one year in favor of one person, hired from among the 520
people, to take out and return films to and from the library/management of the bimonthly
projection/public management based on reservations/room accommodation at the end of the
screening;
– Refund of monthly expenses for one year in favor of one person, hired from among the 520
people, for the bi-monthly sending of communications through newsletters to the mailing list of
beneficiaries as well as collecting reservations;
– Reimbursement of one-off expenditure for the accounting administration;
– Reimbursement of one-off expenditure for the communication employee;
– “Suspended card”: membership of the Ass. ColtivAzione of 50 members;
– Refund bus tickets for beneficiaries of the project:
– Photographic documentation of the project, printing and final exhibition setting.
For the realization of the project for the duration of one year, 11000 euros are needed.
Regardless of the outcome of the fundraising, the project will take place, albeit with a shorter duration or fewer beneficiaries.
